Few symbols in New York City carry as much weight as the FDNY badge. Worn by the bravest men and women in the city, the Fire Department of New York logo is one of the most recognized emblems in the world - but how much do you know about its history?

Origins of the FDNY

The Fire Department of New York was officially established in 1865, making it one of the oldest professional fire departments in the United States. Before that, New York City relied on volunteer fire companies - a chaotic system that often saw competing crews fighting each other instead of the flames.

The FDNY badge has evolved significantly over the decades. The original design featured a simple shield motif, reflecting the protective nature of the department's mission. Over time, the design incorporated the Maltese Cross - a symbol with deep roots in firefighting history dating back to the Knights of St. John in the 12th century.

The Maltese Cross

The eight-pointed Maltese Cross at the center of the FDNY logo is perhaps its most distinctive element. The cross was adopted by firefighters centuries ago after the Knights of St. John - who wore it as their symbol - famously helped extinguish flaming weapons used against them in battle. The eight points of the cross represent the eight obligations of a knight: live in truth, have faith, repent sins, give proof of humility, love justice, be merciful, be sincere and wholehearted, and endure persecution.

For modern FDNY firefighters, the Maltese Cross represents these same values of courage, honor, and selfless service.

The FDNY Shield Today

Today's FDNY shield is instantly recognizable worldwide. The department's full name arcs across the top, with the city seal prominently displayed. The number on each firefighter's shield identifies their specific company - a source of immense pride within the department.

Counterfeit FDNY merchandise is unfortunately common, particularly in tourist areas around New York City. Authentic officially licensed FDNY apparel features the correct badge proportions and is produced under strict licensing agreements with the department.
